Key Player Updates
Anrich Nortje: The Strike Bowler Returns
Anrich Nortje, a pivotal figure in South Africa’s bowling attack, last played for the Proteas in the June Men’s World T20 final. There, he emerged as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, with 15 dismissals in nine matches.
Despite missing the recent ODI series against Pakistan due to a fractured toe, Nortje has fully recovered and is expected to spearhead South Africa’s pace attack in the Champions Trophy.
Lungi Ngidi: Overcoming Challenges
Lungi Ngidi has also been included in the squad after a prolonged absence due to a groin injury suffered in November.
His return adds depth and experience to South Africa’s pace lineup, which will be crucial in the high-stakes tournament.
Maharaj and Mulder: Boosting the Squad
Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj reclaims his spot in the ODI squad after recovering from an adductor strain. His return will provide the team with a valuable spin option.
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder also makes his comeback, strengthening South Africa’s middle order and offering both bat and ball versatility.
Notable Omissions
The squad announcement also highlighted some notable absentees:
- Gerald Coetzee, who played in the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2023, has not recovered from a groin injury sustained during the first Test against Sri Lanka.
- All-rounders Andile Phehlukwayo and Corbin Bosch, along with left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin, have been left out.
Upcoming Challenges
South Africa is challenging alongside England, Australia, and Afghanistan. The team will begin its campaign against Afghanistan in Karachi on February 21.
